Salalah, the capital of Dhofar province, second largest city in the Sultanate of Oman, the birthplace of Sultan Qaboos bin Said. Between 1931-1970 Salalah was the capital of Oman, Sultan Qaboos moved the capital to Muscat.
Salalah and Dhofar are most popular during Khareef (monsoon) season – from July till September. The word “khareef” means “autumn” in Arabic.
With 250m depth, width of 1000m and volume 90 million m3, Tayq sinkhole is one of the largest in the world. During wet season, two streams fall down (waterfalls!), meet in the deepest part of the sinkhole and disappear underground.
Once one of the largest ports in region, on the frankincense trail, with the palace of the Queen of Sheba.
